Track National Champions

A strong team of Jason Sears (G), AJ Schrauth (G), Michael Garrett (G), Yuri Matsumoto (G), Katie Lovejoy (G) and Martha Buckley (G) traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado to contest usacycling’s collegiate track national championships. After finishing second last year to the United States Military Academy, the MIT cycling team was determined and focused to take one step up the podium this year. After organizing the ECCC track season and spending many days at the New England Velodrome and on the road, the team was well prepared for this last step up.

After three days of racing in between rain, the MIT Cycling Team overtook Depauw University in the last event to claim the title by a margin of 687 to 608. This national title adds to the 2008 Road National Championship, 2007-2008 National Omnium title and the 2006-2007 cyclocross National Championsihp.

Top individual honors were claimed by Michael Garrett who placed 8th in a combined Division I/II mens’s ominum with 32 points after contesting the Match Sprint, 1 kilometer time trial and points race.

In the team events, MIT placed 6th (1st in division II) in the Collegiate Team Pursuit (mixed gender), 3rd in the Women’s Team Pursuit (1st in division II) and 9th in the Men’s Team Pursuit.
